TWENTY-NINE
Suffield County Hospital
DETECTIVE CHANDLER walked down the large tiled corridor in the basement of the county hospital, the crepe soles of his topsiders squishing and echoing along the halls. Here, away from the public areas of the hospital, the walls were plain, and some parts still looked like unfinished concrete. He stopped at the door to the morgue. He pulled his coat collar up over his neck.
The Medical Examiner, Tammera, looked up from her glasses as he entered.
Damn it was cold; everything was always absolutely freezing. The first time he’d sat through an autospy, the body had been quite decomposed and he’d been getting sick in his mouth behind his mask, and thinking, “I could never do this job, I’d never be able to deal with the smell.” But after a while, he’d stopped noticing it.
As a detective, Chandler was interested in the minutest details about the bodies and what he could discover, but as a person, he was a little embarrassed about the intrusion into the sacred realm of the dead. A morgue wasn’t a place he liked to visit, but it was part of the job, so he joked about it. A nervous habit. Jokes kept the mind off other nasty thoughts.
Tammera wore green scrubs, and a clear plastic apron with a large front pocket filled with wads of pink Kleenex. Her black curly hair was covered with a net.
“Chandler, it’s great to see you.” She walked over and he hugged her.
“Tammy, you’re looking well. Either I’m getting older or you are getting younger, but…”
“Quit the bullshit. What brings you here?”
“The cruise ship bodies. All the Americans that died were brought to you.”
“I figured they would assign you to the case to investigate it.” She walked over to a wall of shiny silver refrigerator drawers, where the bodies were stored before and after they were autopsied.
“Yeah, lucky me, I get all the glamorous accidents. I get to interview all the tan, rich, arrogant passengers for days.”
Tammera rolled her eyes and started opening the first compartment after reading the white sticker on the door. She slid out the long tray. The first body was an elderly woman with no signs of trauma to her arms, legs, or torso.
“She was found off the ship?”
“No, in her bed on the ship, the morning after.” “Okay, don’t need to see her.”
“You said the bodies they brought in from the cruise.”
“That I did. I meant the ones found in the water, or on deck, not the ninety-year-old that died peacefully in her sleep from a heart attack.”
“She died of cancer.”
“Okay, then.” He did remember reading that in his files. “Corpse number two.” She slid open another drawer with the petite naked body of a young, freckle-faced, red-head girl. She had large holes in both sides of her swollen, soggy torso, and she was missing her right foot, and four fingers on her right hand; other than that, she looked like she was sleeping.
“Shark attack kill her?” From this vantage point, he couldn’t see any other trauma.
